Version 1 · Effective October 4, 2026
Privacy Policy
This policy explains what information the Boatze mobile app and website (together, "Boatze") collect, how we use it, who we share it with, and the choices you have. Boatze is owned and operated by Caprilis Investments LLC ("we," "us"), Florida, United States.
The short version. We collect what the app needs to work: your account, the reports, spots and routes you post, and your location while the app is open. We only send you marketing email if you opt in. We don't sell your information, we don't show ads, and we don't track you across other apps or websites.
1. Information we collect
Account information
When you create an account we collect your email address, a password (stored only in hashed form by our authentication provider), a display name, and the type of vessel you run (jet ski, boat, sailboat, kayak or other).
Location
Boatze asks for location access while the app is in use. It does not collect location in the background. Your location is used on your phone to center the map, measure your speed, and trigger alerts. It leaves your phone in these cases:
- When you post something. A report, spot or fuel price is saved with the location you chose.
- Route planning. The start and end points of a route are sent to our server to plan it. Planned routes are cached by rounded coordinates so other boaters get them faster; the cache is not linked to your account.
- Searching places. When you search for marinas, fuel, restaurants and similar places, the search and the area you're in are sent to our server, which looks them up with Google Places.
- Activity map. While you're signed in and the app is open, your position is rounded to a grid cell of about 250 meters and recorded with your account and the hour. Other users only ever see totals per cell, and a cell is only shown once two or more different people have been in it.
- Learned speeds. While you follow a route, the app records, per area of about 150 meters and per day, how much of your usual cruise speed you held there. It keeps no times finer than the day and no order between areas, and an area only affects others' arrival times once three or more boaters have been through it.
- Live location for friends (optional). If you turn on location sharing, your current position, heading and speed are stored and shown only to people you've accepted as friends, and only while sharing is on. Turning it off removes your live position.
- Recorded trips. Trips you record stay on your phone. They leave it only if you publish one as a shared route.
- Maps, charts and conditions. To draw the map and show weather, tides and charts, the app requests data for the area on screen from the map and data providers listed in section 4. Those requests include coordinates of that area, as any map app's would.
Content you post
Reports (type, location or drawn area, alert radius and an optional note of up to 200 characters), your confirmations and dismissals of other reports, spots (name, kind, description, location and up to six photos), fuel prices, and routes you publish (the GPS track and who can see it). From your reports and others' votes on them we calculate reputation points and a level (Newcomer, Regular, Trusted, Expert).
Friends
Your account gets a private six-letter friend code. If you share it, we store your friend requests and friendships.
Agreements and email preferences
When you sign up, or accept a new version of our Terms of Use, Liability Waiver or this Privacy Policy, we record which versions you accepted, when, how (sign-up or later in the app), and the app version and platform you used. We also record whether you agreed to receive marketing email, and when you said yes or no.
Photos
If you add a photo to a spot, the app asks for access to your camera or photo library. Only the photos you choose are uploaded.
Device information
The app creates a random identifier on your device to prevent duplicate votes and spam. Your app settings (alert preferences, saved places, units) are stored on your phone. When the app checks for updates, our app update provider receives basic technical information such as app version, platform and runtime version.
What we don't collect
We don't collect your contacts, messages, microphone audio, health data, or payment information, and we don't use advertising identifiers. Voice alerts are generated on your phone.
2. What other users can see
Boatze is a community app. The following is visible to other Boatze users:
- Reports you post, with their location, note and your display name, until they expire, and your reputation level.
- Routes you publish, to everyone or only to friends, as you choose.
- Your live position, only to accepted friends and only while you share it.
- Spots you share, including their photos. Spot photos are stored at public web addresses.
- Fuel prices you post, with the place and time.
- Activity totals per area, never individual positions.
Don't include anyone's personal information, or photos where people can be identified, in what you post.
3. How we use information
- To run the app: show and share reports, alert you, plan routes, find places, and show conditions.
- To keep reports reliable: count confirmations and dismissals and limit duplicate or abusive posts.
- To run your account: sign-in, password resets and account deletion.
- To keep Boatze safe and working: fix bugs, prevent abuse, and enforce our Terms of Use.
- To keep proof of the agreements you accepted.
- To send you news, tips and offers about Boatze by email, only if you opted in. Every marketing email has an unsubscribe link, and you can also turn it off in Settings. We'll still send account emails (sign-up confirmation, password reset, important changes to our terms).
- To respond when you contact us.
- To meet legal obligations.
4. Who we share information with
We don't sell or rent personal information, and we don't share it for cross-context behavioral advertising. We share information only with service providers that help run Boatze, and only what each needs:
| Provider | What for | What they receive |
|---|---|---|
| Supabase (U.S.) | Database, sign-in, photo storage, server functions | Account, posts, photos, activity cells |
| Google Places | Place search and details | Your search text and the area you're searching |
| Apple Maps (iPhone) / Google Maps (Android) | Base map | Map area on screen |
| NOAA, National Weather Service, NDBC | Charts, tides, currents, forecasts, buoys | Coordinates of the area on screen |
| Open-Meteo, Iowa Environmental Mesonet | Wind, marine weather, radar | Coordinates of the area on screen |
| OpenStreetMap services (Overpass, Nominatim) | Shoreline and place names | Coordinates of the area on screen |
| Expo | App updates | App and device technical information |
| Apple App Store, Google Play | App distribution | Governed by their own privacy policies |
We may also disclose information if required by law, subpoena or court order, to protect someone's safety, to investigate abuse of the service, or as part of a merger, acquisition or sale of assets, in which case this policy continues to apply to the information transferred.
5. How long we keep information
- Account and profile: until you delete your account.
- Reports: they disappear from the map when they expire (from 1 hour to 30 days, depending on the type). We keep expired report records for up to 12 months to handle abuse and keep the service reliable, then delete them.
- Activity map: your current cell is kept for up to 1 day; hourly activity records for up to 90 days.
- Learned speeds: up to 12 months.
- Live location: only while you share it.
- Agreement records: for as long as you have an account and up to 7 years after, as proof of what was accepted.
- Spots, photos, shared routes and fuel prices: until you or we remove them.
- Route cache: kept for performance and not linked to any account.
6. Your choices and rights
- Marketing email: opt in or out at any time in Settings, or with the unsubscribe link in any marketing email.
- Location: you can turn location access off in your phone's settings. The map and reports still work, but alerts and routing from your position won't.
- Camera and photos: only requested when you add a photo; you can turn access off any time.
- Edit or remove posts: you can delete spots you shared from inside the app.
- Delete your account: in the app, open Settings and choose Delete account, or follow the steps on our account deletion page. This deletes your account, profile, votes, fuel price posts, activity and speed records, friendships, live location and shared routes. Reports and spots you posted stay visible without your name until they expire or are removed; delete your spots first if you want their photos removed too.
- Access, correction, deletion: depending on where you live (for example California and other U.S. states), you may have the right to know what we hold about you, get a copy, correct it, or have it deleted. Email us and we'll respond within 45 days. We won't treat you differently for using these rights.
7. Security
Data is encrypted in transit, access to each table is limited by database rules so users can only change their own records, and our server keys are never shipped in the app. No system is perfectly secure, so please use a unique password.
8. Children
Boatze is not directed to children under 13, and we don't knowingly collect personal information from them. If you believe a child under 13 has created an account, contact us and we will delete it.
9. Where data is stored
Boatze is run from the United States and our data is stored in the United States. If you use Boatze from another country, your information will be transferred to and processed in the U.S.
10. Changes to this policy
If we change this policy we'll update the date at the top. If the change is significant, we'll also tell you in the app before it takes effect.
